Joni Mitchell Tribute by Acclaimed Jazz Singer Tierney Sutton to Benefit Full-Circle Learning

Check out the Tierney Sutton concert on August 1st to benefit the Full-Circle Learning program!

Tierney Sutton, named “Jazz Vocalist of the Year” by Jazzweek Magazine, and called “one of the most- lauded jazz vocalists of her generation” by the New York Times, will make her first-ever Sierra Foothills appearance at the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley on Saturday, August 1st.

Tierney and her band will play and sing their audience-mesmerizing Joni Mitchell tribute program from her critically-acclaimed album After Blue, accompanied by poetic Parisian guitarist Serge Merlaud and cello virtuoso Mark Summer. Sutton comes to Grass Valley at the peak of her career to support the Nevada County-based global nonprofit educational organization Full-Circle Learning. Sutton volunteered to work with Full-Circle Learning’s programs serving urban inner-city Los Angeles children back in the early 1990s.

Sutton and her band have recently headlined shows at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, the Hollywood Bowl and the Kennedy Center. Nominated for seven Grammy Awards, her albums feature a soulful mix of jazz, Americana and popular music that has driven her past nine albums to the top of the jazz charts. At the Center for the Arts, Sutton and the band will present their latest project, “After Blue,” an intimate, jazz-inspired re-imagining of the legacy of Joni Mitchell. The After Blue album features a who’s- who of the jazz world, including Al Jarreau, Hubert Laws, Peter Erskine, Larry Goldings, Serge Merlaud, Kevin Axt and The Turtle Island Quartet.

Sutton’s Joni Mitchell Tribute program sold out for four nights, with two shows per night, at San Francisco Jazz this past summer. The poignant timing of the Grass Valley performance honors the legendary Joni Mitchell, who suffered an aneurysm in March.

The benefit concert will take place Saturday, August 1 at the Center for the Arts. Doors open at 7:00 pm, and the concert starts at 8:00 pm. The Center for the Arts is located at 314 W. Main in Grass Valley.Advance tickets are available online at thecenterforthearts.org/tickets; at the Center for the Arts box office, by phone at (530)274-8384; or at the Briar Patch, at 2950 Sierra College Drive in Grass Valley.
